My prayer today: “O Lord, fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit in power to live a holy life and effectiveness and boldness and wisdom in evangelism” Ephesians 5:18; Acts 4:31; Luke 11:13; Galatians 5:13-26; Acts 1:8; 2 Corinthians 7:1
Paul Washer said at the G3 conference in Atlanta recently, something like, “how many of you know how to pray and wait on God, and plead with God until the power of God falls on you with fresh power for ministry?” (from my memory)
In a sense, the power of God has already fallen if we are born-again by the Spirit of God – Romans 5:5 says the love of God through the Holy Spirit has already been poured out within our hearts, if we are a true Christian. (see also Romans 8:9; Ephesians 1:13-14; 1 Corinthians 12:13) We must let the word of God richly dwell within us and keep on surrendering to the Holy Spirit and step out in obedience and faith. Some people are waiting too long and being too introspective and never do anything or witness or take a step to reach out. There is a balance; and we need both intense times in the Word and prayer, but there comes a time when we must take action. “Act like men, be strong” 1 Corinthians 16:13 says. But we need a fresh filling constantly to continue to live holy, make war against our own sins, to love others, to persevere in trials, and to minister to others in encouragement, preaching and teaching, service, sacrifice, mercy, kindness to the lowly and unlovely and hurting people.
The point is, sometimes we who are doctrinally sound keep doing things by our Scripture knowledge and theological knowledge rather than the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit, and that should not be. We need the combination of the Truth of the Word deep in our mind, heart, and souls and also the passion, power, and filling of the Holy Spirit to do good works, live holy, and do effective ministry.
