Missions and suffering – John Piper

Updated: May 11, 2020

True missions involves a willingness to suffer and a renouncing of the expectations of the flesh for comfort. The Prosperity heresies of the “Word of Faith” movement play and manipulate every human beings basic desires for safety, comfort, success, blessing, and a happy comfortable life. In reality, it is not just missions that calls for the willingness to suffer, but every Christian has to have a renewed mind of the willingness to suffer, because even if you are not going to be a missionary, you will suffer. This is the essence of what Jesus meant in Luke 9:23 – “If you wish to be My disciple, deny yourself, take up your cross daily, and follow Me”. That is for all Christians, all disciples of Jesus. Jesus promised suffering and trouble in this world. John 16:33. The apostles taught it. (Acts 14:22; 2 Timothy 3:12; 1 Peter 2:20-25; and many more all over the New Testament) If that will be the normal part of every Christian’s life; then how much more a missionary? Are you willing?
